good morning, america. this morning -- breaking news overnight. a mysterious explosion kills two people and damages more than a dozen home. right now, there's still no word that caused the blast that decimated an entire neighborhood. uncovered. a flood of new details this morning about how the fbi discovered the extramarital affair that brought down america's top spy as we learn more about the highly-accomplished woman at the center of this scandal. an exclusive interview with a wounded warrior who she helped. black thursday backlash. holiday shopping season is starting earlier than ever with many stores opening their doors on thanksgiving offering better bargains. but now, some employees are fighting back. ♪

abc's john schriffen is on the story. john, good morning. >> reporter: our affiliate is now reporting at least two people are dead, eight others injured. the blast rocked the neighborhood when many were asleep. forced to quickly grab their pets and flee in their pajamas. authorities have been using searchlights going door to door to see if the number of victims will grow. those at the scene said it looked like a war zone. a deafening explosion late saturday night, left this quiet suburban neighborhood up in flames. two houses leveled. two others set ablaze and more than 200 people forced from their homes. the scene, collapsed walls and metal from cars melted. the blast could be heard from miles around. compelling neighbors to jump into action. >> as soon as i got to the house and i heard those people screaming, all i could think

was, these people need to get out. >> reporter: the shock waves blew out windows and garage doors of nearby houses. many damaged by flying debris. >> as soon as you go outside it was like it was snowing. insulation falling down from the sky. the house, that i just saw, was just gone. there was nothing left. >> reporter: many neighbors are staying with relatives and friends. others are sleeping on cots at a local elementary school. they should have a better understanding of what caused when the sun comes up. we turn now to the latest on the bombshell that's still reverberating through washington. more details about the shocking scandal that cost the head of the cia his job. david kerley has new information about david petraeus' extramarital affair came to light. >> reporter: we're learning

stunning details about this scandal. about a frighten e-mail that brought down david petraeus. it was an affair between petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell. broadwell had access to petraeus. when he was running the war in afghanistan. >> they trusted me. i was able to get great access. i got to know his family and his mentors. >> reporter: confirmed as cia director more than a year ago. several sources tell abc news that it was an e-mail that unravelled the affair. a couple of months ago, a woman apparently in the tampa area, with a association with david petraeus, received a strange and harassing e-mail she not mied the fbi, which launched the investigation. the e-mail was traced back to the computer of paula broadwell. but what agents found instead of a compromised account, were

salacious e-mails between petraeus and broadwell. >> there had been rumors of an affair between him and broadwell for some time. >> he has written a book about petraeus that will be released next year. >> but, frankly, i didn't believe them and neither did just about anybody else i knew. he just didn't seem the type. >> reporter: martha raddatz reports that some of his afghanistan staff worried about how it looked with broadwell spending so much time with him. the investigation has been under way for a couple of months. an official tells abc news that it was just tuesday evening that the head of national intelligence was told. james talked to petraeus several times that night and wednesday. advising the cia director to resign. thursday at the white house, petraeus offered his resignation to the president, who waited 24 hours to accept. so shocking, because petraeus himself had been critical of officers guilty of infidelity.

>> he spoke of them in this tone of contempt that they had engaged in this type of dishonorable behavior. >> this morning, he has no plans to start the investigation. into petraeus' activities with broadwell. >> david, so many people are questioning the timing of this, coming just days after the election, if the fbi had been investigating the situation for months, how is it the white house and congress were both left in the dark? >> reporter: peter king one of those raising questions. no response directly from the white house yet. intelligence committee, investigators for the intelligence community will say, listen, this wasn't a matter of national security. what they found was really a personnel issue. >> all right, i have a feeling that this story is far from over.

david, thank you so much. dan? this scandal has derailed two promising careers. paula broadwell is a lifelong overachiever, she graduated from harvard, wrote a best-selling book, homecoming queen, a triathlete and mother of two. >> reporter: i spoke to friends and colleagues who knew paula broadwell. the picture emerges is someone who devoted to philanthropy. they called her the star of her generation at west point. >> technology can't solve all of the problems. >> reporter: she was featured in a documentary about weapons system. while she's know for her good looks, military smarts and enviable physique, friends said that she was also devoted to the cause of wounded warriors, making it even more ironic that this scandal

comes on veterans day weekend. >> takes the time to help somebody like me. there's not much time left for indiscretions. >> reporter: david bixler, a wounded warrior knows paula through a charity foundation. last week, broadwell was scheduled to skydive but donated it to bixler. in an exclusive interview with abc news, he questions these latest allegations. >> i have some serious questions about who's connecting these dots and how. >> reporter: some of her colleagues say that she's someone to be admired, also said that she's reversed the cause of young women in the military. those who know her said that she was facebook all the time. on friday morning, her 40th birthday, she posted an a message about mortality and exercise. friends say that a likely clue that she had no ideas that hours later her

entire profile would be wiped. not sure when her husband learned about this affair. but this image was etched on the driveway outside the home. broadwell was celebrate to her 40th birthday at a dinner at washington. her husband called and canceled the event late friday. dan? >> thank you. so, how does this scandal likely to play for a newly-re-elected president? abc's george stephanopoulos is here. george, good morning. lot of people, especially on the republican side, raising questions about the timing. as asked in her questions, some people say that this is a little fishy. does this scandal, does it have the potential to derail the president's agenda? >> i don't think so. i was a little surprised that this had gone on for several months. apparently, the white house wasn't told until wednesday. as long as that holds up, you won't see any national security

implications. but what you will see, the president was already planning to replace secretary of state hillary clinton and secretary of defense leon p pennetta was planning on leaving. and there's that investigation of what happened in benghazi going on. >> and i want to ask you about that because david he tpetraeus set to testify on benghazi this week. the republicans aren't happy about that. >> unlikely to be good enough for a lot of members of congress. peter king wants to speak petraeus directly. this week, i'll be talking to saxby chambliss. do they still want to hear from david petraeus himself? we'll see what he says. >> quickly, george, on the fiscal cliff, the tax hikes that will go into effect on january 1st, the president is saying i want to raise taxes on rich people. the republicans said, no go.

do you see any pathway to a deal here? >> there's going to have to be a pathway to a deal here. as you point out, you'll have a big hit on january 1st, spending cuts and tax increases. right now, both sides are dug in. there's some middle ground. is there a way to get new revenue out of the wealthy without raising their rates? >> george, thank you. as always, george has a must-watch show this morning. patty murray and saxby chambliss and his powerhouse roundtable. all coming up on "this week." let's get over to ron claiborne with the other top stories. good morning, everyone. we begin with politics. they finally finished counting ballots in florida. the official winner in that state barack obama. president obama edged out mitt romney by 74,000 out of 8 million cast. the governor of florida will seek to see what it can do to improve the voting process in florida.

many people waited as long as seven hours to cast their ballots. power is finally coming back for thousands of people in new jersey still in the dark since superstorm sandy. people should have power restore today. 98% of homes and businesses in new york have their lights back on. but progress is much slower on long island where hundreds of angry residents protested outside of power companies. and actors justin timberlake and jessica biel were among the volunteers helping clean up storm-ravaged rockaways queen. they were handing out food and supplies to victims of the area which was hard hit by that storm. and the country's largest four-year college system is looking to crackdown on so-called superseniors. officials at the california state university system which has over 400,000 students they'll vote this week on

what they're calling graduation incentive themes. encouraging students to finish their degrees in four years, to make room for new students, triple the costs for students that take five years to finish. finally, the newest balloons in macy's thanksgiving day parade. they went out for a test-drive. hundreds of volunteers took hello kitty, papa smurf and elf on the shelf for a spin on saturday. >> are you looking forward to that parade? >> very much so. sometimes they have crashed into street lights. they have to be careful. >> we're hoping that doesn't happen this year. enough with the crane in new york. time now to check the weather, ginger zee in the house. good morning. >> one of the biggest snow totals that we found yesterday was in montana, they had 48 inches. parts of colorado had a lot in the mountains itself.

denver, 1 to 2 inch. created a little problem on a runway here. kmgh, our official abc station there got this photo. and real, i wasn't a huge problem, it slid off the runway, passengers were okay. farther east, in central kansas, just west of wichita, look at the lightning in the middle of that storm. incredible stuff. tumbleweeds very kansaslike. there were about severe weather reports yesterday. severe weather is going to be an issue here today. here's the area that i'm most concerned with. little rock, shreveport. anywhere in northeast texas, be aware later this afternoon and evening. rain in a lot of places. iowa down into missouri, the heart of the heaviest rain. chicago gets into it later tonight. that game you got at soldier, bring the rain gear for that one. then you have the cold, look at how icy it is. sacramento is at 35. burbank, 45. some freeze warnings and watches out. a nice day ahead in the northeast.

the mountain. beautiful shots. dan and bianna? >> safe to say, ginger has different tastes in weather than most human beings. >> all right, thank you, ginger. now to the backlash to black thursday. holiday shopping blitz traditionally begins the day after thanksgiving, otherwise known as black friday. but some major retailers just announced they'll be opening their doors earlier than ever this holiday shopping season on thanksgiving night, in fact, and not everyone is taking the news so well. some employees are up in arms of giving up one of their favorite holidays. abc's tanya rivero is here with their story. >> that's right. store workers are saying enough is enough. last year, many started working before midnight on thanksgiving. many have to come in so early they can't have dinners with their families this year. they're organizing and fighting back. forget black friday. this year, many retailers are betting you'll want to start

tackling your christmas list and possibly other shoppers as soon as you put down your pumpkin pie. walmart, sears and k-mart will open with door-busting deals at 8:00 p.m. this thanksgiving day. while best buy, macy's and kohl's will open at midnight. while some shoppers are game -- >> we do lunch between the hours of 12:00 and 3:00. relaxing. instead of watching football we can be doing some shopping. >> reporter: others say, enough already. >> americans are unique in the world because we celebrate thanksgiving day. >> reporter: but turning turkey day black has many store workers seeing red. >> i think everyone in america tends to want to celebrate. >> reporter: led by change.org, retailers are now asking their employees to save thanksgiving and stick with last year's black friday opening times, so they can have dinner with their families. holiday shopping is expected to

jump more than 4% this year. and competition is fierce. >> we're really excited about the 8:00 start date. not only to be competitive but to beat our competitor's requests. >> if they treat their employees right, i think it will be a wonderful environment. >> reporter: still, the savviest business tactics may be taking the high road. some stores, like nordstrom's win customers by not decking the halls early. as it moves up every year, many are wondering how far or how low can stores go? >> thanksgiving should be recognized as thanksgiving. and not thanksgiving/christmas. >> it's likely all of the same deals that can be found on thanksgiving or black friday this year can also be found online. the only reason to hit the actual stores is if you're worried about inventory running out or if you love the thrill of shopping. >> so many people worried about both. love shopping and worried about things running out.

but first, we were talking earlier about how stores are starting holiday shopping early, so are thieves. ripping off gifts that people have on layaway. this may be the start of a worrying trend. mark greenblatt is on the story. good morning, sir. >> reporter: good morning. they're being called real-life grinches. robbers knock off walmarts stealing gifts for the holidays. people who had these gifts on layaway. they're getting an early start this year. you might recall wild fights breaking out on black friday last year, or even sights like this. all in the pursuit of a bargain. >> we got it. >> reporter: well, this year, police say the group you're looking at wanted to get a head start. they're seen walking out of walmart in taylor, pennsylvania, without paying for tools they would later use to break into these trailers where layaway gifts are held for people. >> people have been through so much.

now they're hitting them before christmas. terrible. >> reporter: the stolen christmas range from toys, to bikes, to electronics. thousands dollars of merchandise now gone. police believe that the group consists of three men and one woman. in their teens, early 20s. they're said to knock off a second walmart the same way nearby. >> it's a sign of the times. >> reporter: the preholiday heists come just as walmart is stocking up nationwide for what its ceo calls the best friday ever. in a statement, they say, it's really someone would steal gifts for the holiday. at the end of the day, we'll do what is right for the customer. law enforcement experts that thefts raise about 30%. when crooks have their eyes wide open for a steal of a deal. >> it's a lot easier for a thief during the holidays because of the sheer volume. what happens is, it becomes a target-rich environment for thieves.
